Everyone has probably felt places in their muscles that feel like knots, and it hurts when we push on them. These “knots” are called trigger points by the medical community.  But what exactly is a trigger point though?

Trigger Point Therapy

When we are injured or have surgery, our muscles in that area or nearby areas can tighten up and cramp. The blood supply can get obstructed or choked off, which can make the muscle even more irritated and unhappy. When there is not a good blood flow, chemicals that cause pain and inflammation can stick around and cause problems.  If there is not fresh, oxygenated blood being delivered to the tight muscle, then healing cannot occur and a vicious cycle of pain can ensue. Trigger points can be the culprits of all sorts of pain, whether that be back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, or headaches (just to name a few).

With trigger point therapy, isolated specific pressure is used.  As the trigger point softens and relaxes, the pressure is typically increased.  The end result is unraveling of the “knot” and increased blood flow to the area.  This will allow the muscle to heal and pain can be alleviated.

As with all our treatment techniques at Northwest Massage Therapy, trigger point massage therapy will be specifically tailored to your needs and your injury.
